Members of the Fraternity – International HumanitarianMissions (FIHM), since May of this year, are developing the Food and Food Security Project within the Portugal Humanitarian Mission.
This pilot project serves as a basis for the study and implementation of self-sustainability practices aimed at improving the procedures necessary for the generation of products that meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations, as well as the cultivating of vegetables, being able to be adapted to different contexts of social and humanitarian crises.
The first stage of this implementation is now coming to its end, the result of which has been the production of vegetables and fruits and taking in donations that resulted in various kinds of dehydrated foods, jellies and juices.
Concurrently, the Food and Food Security Project promoted three workshops on Multi-mixture Flour, in Portugal and Angola, training agents in the making of an important food supplement.
This type of activity is part of the actions that deal directly with Food Security, specifically with Standard 3, as provided for in the Sphere Humanitarian Standards (M.E. p.191)
In the second phase of the implementation, which is beginning now, “the team of humanitarian aid volunteers expands the network of collaborators and the scope of the activity to encompass a new range of products and possibilities for processing, always having the objective of supplying needs and generating autonomy through the exchange of knowledge and technical training”, says Aadrika, a humanitarian aid volunteer and member of the Portugal Mission.
