A beautiful cultural act was carried out, on June 22, in the Janokoida Indigenous Shelter, located in the city of Pacaraima, border between Brazil and Venezuela. Janokoida means Big House in Warao, the Indigenous language of the 453 natives sheltered there. Dances, songs, theater and typical food marked the awareness-raising of the “Refugee World Day”.
The atmosphere of brotherhood, gratitude, respect and hope was perceptible. These feelings were verbalized by both the Indigenous people and the missionaries of Fraternidade – International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF).
The presentations were concentrated from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but the whole preparation of the event, which was done on the previous days, marked the valuing of the Warao culture and the continuity of the principles that orient the way this ethnicity handle the vulnerability that the situation of refugee so many times implies.
In the shelters it administers, in different ways, such as education, artisanship, sports, art, Fraternidade cultivates bonds of trust and respect among and with the refugees.
In the Refugee World Day, the group of sheltered Venezuelan Indigenous people thankfully expressed its consideration for the welcoming received in Brazilian land and for the giving of self of each missionary life that, in the simplicity of everyday life, seeks to unveil new perspectives, in union with each refugee.
